Privacy And the Independent Cable Operator
Personal information is the lifeblood of cable. It has tremendous strategic value in addition to being an essential element of day-to-day business. Yet if not used correctly and contained, it is a toxic asset that can leave a huge mess.
Back in 1984, the privacy provisions of the newly minted Cable Act raised few concerns; give an annual notice and don’t disclose that the mayor was getting adult programming. New technology and new services have vastly increased the amount of information automatically collected. Moreover, subscriber payments by credit cards, electronic checks, electronic funds transfer and online transactions mean that operators have much more protected data than ever before.
Despite the cable-specific requirements and the CPNI requirements for VoIP providers, the non-cable specific privacy obligations may warrant the most immediate need for independent operators to assess their level of privacy proficiency.
On November 16, 2010, Independent Cable News and Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC, will provide a free webinar to provide operators with practical advice on addressing these obligations. Read the article on page 3 of October ICN, and go to www.wcsr.com/independentcable to register.
